If you love chicken wings as much as I do, you know they’re always a hit—whether it’s game day, a weekend BBQ, or a quick weeknight dinner. But what do you do when you make too many wings, want to prep raw chicken wings ahead for an easy meal, or save leftover chicken wings from your last cookout? That’s where knowing how to freeze chicken wings can be a game-changer—it’s the best way to preserve their flavor and texture for future meals.

In this guide, I’ll show you how to freeze chicken wings (both raw and cooked) so they stay fresh longer and reheat perfectly. Plus, I’ll share one of my all-time favorite wing recipes, Grilled Wings with Alabama White Sauce, to inspire your next cookout.

Why Freezing Chicken Wings Is a Good Idea

Chicken wings are one of the most affordable yet delicious chicken wings you can buy. They’re perfect for grilling, baking, air frying, or smoking, especially when finished with your favorite wing sauce. Freezing them is a great way to avoid waste while ensuring you always have enough chicken wings for next time.

When done properly, freezing wings retains the best quality, and ensures they’ll reheat beautifully, whether they’re plain or pre-seasoned. But what happens when you don’t freeze chicken wings properly? Improperly frozen wings can develop freezer burn, which not only dries out the meat but also creates unpleasant textures and flavors.

Wings stored in excess air may become tough, rubbery, or lose their juiciness when thawed and reheated. In some cases, improperly stored wings can develop an unpleasant odor or even show signs of spoilage, making them unsafe to eat. Believe me, it's never fun to lose meat that you've paid your hard-earned money for because you didn't take the time to store it properly. I made that mistake with a brisket one time, a considerably more expensive cut of meat, and said never again. It's times like that you remember why it is so important to store food the right way.

By taking the time to freeze chicken wings the right way, you’ll avoid these issues and ensure that your wings stay juicy, flavorful, and ready to enjoy whenever you need them. Next, I'll go through what I believe to be the essential tools you need to make storing chicken wings as easy and efficient as possible.

Equipment

To freeze chicken wings like a pro, you’ll need the following tools:

  • Resealable Silicone bags
  • Vacuum sealer (my favorite for long-term storage)
  • Vacuum seal bags or freezer bags
  • Baking sheet lined with parchment paper
  • Plastic wrap or aluminum foil

How to Freeze Chicken Wings

Step 1: Preparing Chicken Wings for Freezing

For Raw Chicken Wings:

  • Remove the wings from their original packaging and pat them dry with paper towels. Reducing moisture helps prevent freezer burn and ice crystals from forming.
  • Season with a little bit of oil and your favorite spices or leave them plain for flexibility when cooking.

Hint: To add flavor upfront, consider marinating the wings in a wet brine (like pickle juice or teriyaki sauce) for a few hours before freezing. This adds salt and acid, giving the wings a flavor boost for your next time on the grill.

For Cooked Chicken Wings:

  • Let the wings cool to room temperature before freezing to prevent condensation and soggy textures.
  • Avoid freezing wings with sauce already applied—it can make them mushy when reheated. It's not as big of a deal as long as the wings aren't breaded or fried, but sticking with a dry rub and saucing the wings separately gives you the flexibility to store the wings the right way for the best possible chicken wings now and in the future.

Step 2: Packaging for Freezing

  • Vacuum Sealing: This is hands-down the safest method to ensure long-lasting freshness. Vacuum sealing removes nearly all the air, which is the primary cause of freezer burn and food degradation. This technique preserves the flavor, texture, and moisture of your chicken wings better than any other option. This is my go-to method for storing not only chicken wings but every piece of leftovers or recently purchased food in our house. I can’t recommend it enough—it’s truly worth the investment. Click the link to see the vacuum sealer I use: Blackdog BBQ Storefront.
  • Alternative Methods: If you don’t have a vacuum sealer, you can still store your chicken wings properly with a few adjustments:
  • Plastic Wrap or Aluminum Foil: Wrap the wings tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil, ensuring there’s as little air inside as possible.
  • Freezer Bag: Place the wrapped wings in a freezer bag and press out as much air as you can before sealing. This method works well for shorter storage periods but may not prevent freezer burn as effectively as vacuum sealing.
  • Resealable Silicone Bags: If you’re looking for a reusable and eco-friendly alternative, resealable silicone bags are a great way to store chicken wings. They’re airtight, durable, and can be used repeatedly for freezing, thawing, and even sous vide cooking. Just make sure to press out as much air as possible before sealing.

Pro Tip: Freezing wings in a single layer on a baking sheet before transferring them to a freezer bag helps prevent them from sticking together.

Common Mistakes (and What to Avoid)

  • Leaving Too Much Air in the Bag or Container: Air is the enemy when it comes to freezing food. Too much air leads to freezer burn, which as I've mentioned before we want to avoid as much as possible.
  • Freezing in Original Packaging: Many people make the mistake of assuming the store’s packaging is freezer-safe, but most are designed for short-term refrigeration. These packages allow air to seep in, leading to spoilage over time. Also, storing wings this way makes it incredibly easy to puncture the plastic film its packed with if it gets accidentally hit by another item in the freezer, which can happen more often than you think.
  • Storing Without Wrapping Properly: The worst mistake you can make is freezing wings without any form of protection, such as tossing them directly into the freezer unwrapped. This leads to severe freezer burn, alters the wings’ texture, and causes them to lose their moisture completely. Trust me, I’ve made this mistake once, and the result was inedible wings that were dry, chewy, and flavorless. Save yourself the hassle and always use a proper storage method!

How to Thaw and Reheat Chicken Wings

Safest Method to Thaw Wings

  • Place frozen wings in the refrigerator overnight to thaw gradually and avoid the danger zone (40–140°F).
  • For a quicker option, use the defrost setting on your microwave, but cook immediately after.

Hint: Never thaw wings at room temperature—this can lead to bacterial growth and spoilage.

Reheating for Maximum Flavor and Crispy Wings

  • Preheat your oven, grill, or air fryer to 375°F.
  • Arrange wings on a sheet pan or in the air fryer basket in a single layer. If reheating on the grill, I prefer to do so over indirect heat and would only recommend this method if you have a ceramic grill or similar product where there is a significant gap between the grates and the heat source.
  • It's always a good choice to reheat leftover wings at the proper temperature (like I mentioned, 375 degrees works great!) for 10-15 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F, using an instant-read thermometer. This will ensure your wings are juicy with a crispy exterior.

By following these best practices for how to freeze chicken wings, you’ll have a stash of flavorful, ready-to-cook wings whenever you need them. Whether you’re freezing leftovers, prepping ahead, or grilling fresh, these tips make wing prep a breeze. I’ve saved so many wings this way, and they’re just as tasty the second time around.

Top Tip

For maximum flavor, toss reheated wings in your favorite sauce, like smoky BBQ or buffalo wing sauce!
