Back when I was a kid, weekends meant one thing: lunch with my dad and granddad. The three of us made it a tradition—three generations sitting down at the same table, swapping stories and sharing a meal. I didn’t realize at the time how rare and special that was, but looking back, those afternoons were something I’ll always hold onto.
My granddad lived in Hoover, Alabama, just outside Birmingham, and after picking him up, we’d head to one of our go-to spots: Baumhower’s. The place was owned by a former Crimson Tide football player, which already gave it bonus points in our book, but what kept us coming back was one thing: the wings. And for me, it was always the same order—sauced up in hot garlic wing sauce. No questions asked.
To this day, that’s still my all-time favorite wing sauce. And this recipe? It’s my homemade take on that childhood favorite. I’ve spent years tweaking it, dialing in the balance of heat and garlic until it came pretty damn close to the original. These days, it’s a staple in our house, and the whole family enjoys it.
In my opinion, the best sauces don’t need to be complicated. This one lets the boldness of classic buffalo sauce shine, then boosts it with just a few key flavor enhancers that I'll cover below. Whether you're tossing wings hot off the smoker or looking for a dipping sauce for your snack spread, this hot garlic buffalo sauce is one you'll want to keep on hand in your own kitchen.

Why I Love This Creamy Buffalo Sauce Recipe So Much
One of the reasons I love this hot garlic wing sauce so much is that it's easy and quick to make—just five minutes start to finish—and uses common, simple ingredients you're likely already have in your pantry. It delivers a balanced flavor with medium heat, a creamy texture, and a smooth consistency that evenly coats wings and meats.
What sets this buffalo wing sauce recipe apart from typical buffalo sauces found at grocery stores is the layering of flavor. Butter melts, mellowing the spice level and adding richness. At the same time, garlic paste adds depth without the chunks typically found in traditionally minced garlic, and Worcestershire sauce contributes umami and complexity. Apple cider vinegar sharpens the profile, while honey adds subtle sweetness to round it out.
The result is a well-balanced, versatile sauce that works on wings, grilled chicken, burgers, or as a dipping sauce—simple, flavorful, and easy to keep in regular rotation.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Add the buffalo sauce (Frank's Hot Sauce makes a good starting point, which I use regularly at home), melted butter, garlic paste, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, honey, and a pinch of salt to a mixing bowl. Stir until the mixture is thoroughly combined and smooth.

- Taste the sauce and adjust the heat level as needed—add more of your favorite hot sauce for a spicy kick or a splash more vinegar if you prefer a tangier flavor.

- Let the sauce sit at room temperature while you prep your wings or sides. This helps the flavors meld and gives the sauce time to thicken slightly. Use immediately to make buffalo chicken wings with a side of celery sticks or store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week. Bring to room temperature before using again for best consistency.

Note: See the recipe card below for a full breakdown of ingredient amounts.
Smart Substitutions When You're in a Pinch
This sauce is designed to be flexible, so if you’re missing something, don’t worry—here’s how to make adjustments without sacrificing flavor.
- Do you need to adjust the type of garlic? If you’re out of garlic paste, substitute finely minced fresh garlic or use roasted garlic cloves for a softer, milder flavor. Garlic powder can also be used as a substitute in a pinch—start with a small amount and adjust to taste.
- No apple cider vinegar on hand? White vinegar works just fine, offering the same acidic edge. Substitute lemon juice for a slightly fresher citrus twist.
- Missing Worcestershire sauce? This one hurts my soul because I swear by Worcestershire sauce in everything, but you can try a dash of soy sauce paired with a pinch of brown sugar. It mimics the salty-sweet umami effect pretty well.
- No honey? You can use maple syrup or agave syrup as an alternative. Even brown sugar dissolved in a little warm water will do the trick.
Ways to Use It Beyond Wings
Yes, I made this sauce to coat wings, but it also is delicious on a variety of other options.
- I like to use it as a creamy dip for crispy fries or sweet potato wedges.
- Drizzle it over grilled chicken, smoked thighs, chicken tenders, or even a juicy burger. I love to swap this sauce into my chicken recipes, such as replacing the original sauce in my Grilled Wings with Alabama White Sauce recipe, or grilled chicken thighs like these Apple Cinnamon Glazed variety I made.
- It makes a fantastic addition to sandwiches when mixed with a bit of mayo or ranch. Try it on your next pork sandwich and you will love it.
- Want to level up your next bowl of mac and cheese? Add a kick of heat you didn't know you needed with this swirl. This is one of my favorite ways to use the sauce.
How to Store Hot Garlic Wing Sauce
Once you’ve made the sauce, let it cool to room temperature before storing. Transfer it to an airtight container—a mason jar or sealed plastic container both work well. Store it in the refrigerator, where it will keep safely for up to 7 days.
Before using leftover sauce, let it sit out until it returns to room temperature, or gently warm it on the stovetop over medium-low heat, stirring to restore its smooth, creamy consistency. Avoid microwaving it at too high a temperature or for too long, as this can cause the butter to separate. If you need to thicken it up, add a starch-based thickener, such as a cornstarch slurry consisting of 1 tablespoon of cornstarch and 1 ½ tablespoons of cold water, to the sauce for an easy fix.
