I'll admit—Bubba Burgers weren't my first choice when it came to crafting smashburgers. In fact, I hadn't cooked with them since college, when my one buddy who had a job during the school year got paid, and we used to have cookouts. But after recently trying their new smashburger-style patties, I've got to admit, I was pleasantly surprised. They have a solid flavor, you get the classic smashburger crust, and they cook even faster than traditional ground beef, making them an excellent option for backyard cookouts or weeknight dinners. I'm going to be incorporating these more often, especially when I'm cooking for a crowd and want a stress-free meal to put on the table that I know everyone will enjoy.
Now I take this Bubba Burger recipe a step further by pairing it with a homemade Spicy Blueberry BBQ Sauce. The sauce achieves a perfect balance of sweet and heat, thanks to the addition of fresh blueberries, jalapeños, brown sugar, and a hint of Dijon mustard. It's a unique addition that elevates the entire dish.

Ingredients
- 1 box of Bubba Burger Smash Burgers
- Burger buns
- Slices of cheese (white American cheese melts beautifully)
- 1 onion, sliced
- 1 jalapeño, diced
- Olive oil
- Fresh blueberries
- Ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, honey, paprika, garlic powder, salt
How to Prepare
Step 1: Make the Spicy Blueberry BBQ Sauce

First, heat olive oil in a pan and sauté the diced jalapeños until they are soft and slightly caramelized. Add blueberries, ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, honey, paprika, garlic powder, and salt. Stir well and bring to a simmer. Let the mixture cook for about 10 minutes, then blend until smooth. Store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator—it will keep for up to 7 days. I'll outline the entire recipe here.

Step 2: Cook the Bubba Burgers
Next, preheat a griddle or cast-iron skillet over high heat. Place the frozen Bubba Burgers directly onto the hot surface—no need to thaw. Once the patties begin to bubble and the edges crisp, flip them. Add a slice of American cheese to each patty and cook until the cheese is melted and bubbly. For extra flavor and height, double-stack the patties. Make sure to sauté the onions while you're cooking the burger patties.
Step 3: Assemble Your Smashburgers

Top each burger with sautéed onions, a generous drizzle of the spicy blueberry sauce, and your favorite toppings, such as pickled jalapeños, lettuce, or crispy bacon. Serve hot on toasted buns.
These Angus Bubba Burgers surprised me with how well they crisp up and deliver on flavor. While I usually make my smash patties, this box of Bubba Burgers is a great shortcut that doesn't skimp on taste. If you're into twists like my smashburgers with BBQ-burger sauce or St. Patrick's Day-style smashburgers, you could swap out the sauce and be good to go. The sauce also complements hot dogs, chicken, and ribs well!
